I have a Sony NEX-VG10, which offers excellent image and video quality with interchangeable lens. It helps me record HD 30p MTS at anytime and anywhere. In order to save time and space, I had to backup some videos to my Mac for later editing. The problem is when MTS files are transferred to Mac without the structure as it was in the camcorder, the import method of FCP X on Mac OX Lion fails to work. I searched and tried many softwares to solve this problem and finally found Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac the best one. It helps me easily import and convert Sony NEX-VG10 MTS footages to Apple ProRes on Mac Lion.

Following I would like to share the steps about how to transcode 30p MTS in Mac OS X Lion to Apple ProRes 422 for FCP X editing.

1.Import MTS from Mac OS X Lion to Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac
First click the Resource tab and then click the “Add a Path” button to browse the folder storing Sony NEX-VG10 MTS files. Choose the ones you would like to convert and click “OK”. The files will be displayed in the blank Resource tab.

2.Create new movies for merging/joining and conversion
Create a new movie for conversion, then drag and drop one or multiple 30p MTS files from Resource tab to the new movie. You can create more movies if you like.

3. Convert 30p MTS to export 30p Apple ProRes
After the new movie is created, click the set format button to set the output format as Final Cut Pro>Apple ProRes 422(HQ) (*mov).This can also be done by clicking the “set parameters” button.Besides, if you want to keep the original quality of the 30p MTS, you are supposed to set the parameters in detail (size: 1920×1080, Bit rate: high quality, Frame Rate: 30)

4. Export ProRes 422 for FCP X
After merging and setting parameters, just click the “Export” button to make the conversion begin. It only takes a few minutes to finish converting Sony NEX-VG10 30p MTS in Mac Lion to Apple ProRes for FCP X.

5. Import Apple ProRes 422 (*mov) to FCP X for editing.
When the conversion finishes, launch FCP X and click the file button and choose “Import”, you can easily and quickly import Sony NEX-VG10 30p files to FCP X for editing.
